Dean Pittman, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Minister-Counselor, currently serves as the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Mozambique. He presented his credentials to the Government of Mozambique on February 18, 2016. Previously, Mr. Pittman served in the Bureau of International Organization Affairs, both as Acting Assistant Secretary of State from 2013 to 2014 and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary from 2010 to 2013.

Other assignments include Senior Diplomacy Advisor to the Department’s Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review from 2009 to 2010, Member of the Secretary’s Office of Policy Planning from 2007 to 2009, and Consul General of U.S. Consulate General Belfast from 2004 to 2007.  He also served as Deputy Director for Governance on a detail to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Baghdad from 2003 to 2004, Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of State from 2002 to 2003, Director for Balkan Affairs, National Security Council from 2000 to 2002, Political Counselor, U.S. Embassy Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina from 1999 to 2000, and Legislative Management Officer for East Asia and Pacific Affairs from 1997 to 1999.  His early assignments included a detail to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe in 1996, and serving as Political Officer in Maputo, Mozambique from 1991 to 1993.

Before the Foreign Service, he was a Legislative Assistant for U.S. Congressman Wayne Dowdy, a reporter, and Peace Corps Volunteer in Gabon.  Mr. Pittman earned a B.A. from Millsaps College in Mississippi and a M.A. from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.
