The National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) is the catalyst of hydrocarbon exploration in Morocco. ONHYM was established on 17 August 2005 as a result of the merger between the Bureau of Research and Mining Participations (BRPM) and the National Office for Research and Petroleum Explorations (ONAREP). The office is the sole interlocutor for potential partners. ONHYM has accumulated 90 years of expertise that make it a strong and reliable partner for Oil and Gas Investors in Morocco.

ONHYM’s missions are:

  • Conducting research, exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbon deposits or oil shale, as well as mineral deposits and any mineral substance (excluding phosphates);
  • Promoting and supporting any action to contribute to the development of exploration and exploitationof hydrocarbons and minerals, particularly in the context of partnerships;
  • Providing rich, reliable and accessible databases to any operator regarding soil and national subsoil, together with documentation on the administrative, financial and legal arrangements;
  • Negotiating with any potential partner, in accordance with the contractual terms and applicable legal provisions.

As the promotor of the hydrocarbon potential in Morocco, ONHYM has noted a growing interest from oil and gas companies for the country’s sedimentary basins. This enthusiasm for exploration in Morocco has also been boosted by the attractive new Hydrocarbons Code enacted in 2000.

As exploration techniques advance and new ideas and concepts are developed, ONHYM and its partners believe that Morocco has a very promising hydrocarbon potential to unlock.
